About Anoop Virk
Anoop Virk is an 18 year old first year student in the Associate’s of Arts Degree in Intercultural and International Studies program at Douglas College. Anoop is one of Canada’s Top 20 under 20, chosen for the national recognition for her volunteer work as co-founder of Project H.E.L.L.O (Helping Everyone Locate Loved Ones). Project H.E.L.L.O. helps the homeless residents of the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver reconnect with their lost friends and family members across the country. To date, the project has reconnected over 260 homeless people through cards, phone calls, or in-person reunions. For her volunteerism, she was invited to Rideau Hall by the Prime Minster and Governor General for the celebration of exceptional Canadian youth and was selected to present a gift to the duke and duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate.
Anoop has always been very involved in volunteering and helping people throughout her entire life. In high school, she completed her French immersion dogwood degree, achieved honor roll with distinction, participated and ran numerous clubs, and was awarded most outstanding citizen. In addition to volunteering with numerous activities such as shelter houses, Anoop has done public speaking which includes being chosen by the Status of Women and Human Rights Committee to speak at the Inspiring Women Event for the University of Women’s Club.
With being awarded various recognitions and achievements such as “24 under 24” by 24 hour newspaper and Douglas College’s President’s Entrance Scholarship, she has been featured through Douglas media outlets and individually through major media sources across Canada such as MacLean’s Magazine and Globe & Mail Newspaper. She has completed internships at CTV BC News, Urban Rush and Rock 101 FM.
Anoop has gained leadership skills through business, educational and volunteer experiences which include public speaking, team work, effective communication and organization skills. This dedicated, determined and eager individual has many passions but hopes to volunteer throughout her life, and possibly find a career in international development and non profit.
