Trust Community School

Trust Community School is located in the community of Race Course, an unplanned settlement community on the outskirts of the city of Kitwe. Race Course and its adjacent communities face enormous social challenges as most of its inhabitants are among the most disadvantaged in the region. Many children in this area do not have the opportunity to attend school, even at the elementary level. Trust Community School provides education for many children whose family cannot afford to place them in the public school system.

Job Title: School Teacher & School Programs Officer

Responsibilities:

Teaching

The intern would be fully involved in teaching the pupils from grade 1-7 on a daily basis, carrying out necessary preparation and working with Zambian colleagues in that preparation and teaching. Subjects taught will be dependent on the students experience and knowledge base. However, ability to teach English is mandatory.

Learning and Support

Part of the job would involve setting aside and spending time with the teaching staff in a process of mutual learning and support.  A young student teacher from a developed country might bring to the table ideas and information on education that teachers in Zambia might not have had access to. Set against that the intern could gain great benefit, knowledge and experience in finding out how Zambian teachers cope with limited resources. The student may also be asked to assist in the development of other school related programs such as the feeding program, physical education and other administrative support as deemed necessary by the staff.

Learning from Cultural differences

The intern would need to be willing to learn from cultural differences that may be encountered, and maybe show a willingness to adapt and adjust to circumstances they may find strange. In return we hope that the students and staff at the school would be enriched by exposure to someone from a culture beyond their own experience.

Supervision

The intern would need to be accountable to the school Headmaster and the school Trustee who would be there to help them adjust and settle and pursue their placement in a meaningful and fulfilling way.

Learning Outcomes

We would expect the intern to have taught the pupils with a measure of success, and contributed to the life of the school in a positive way. Students will be evaluated on their performance during and after their internship to provide feedback and assess the learning and skills that were developed during the 3 month internship.
