The organizers of Comics and the Multimodal World: An International Conference are pleased to announce that Thursday, June 13 will be Student Day at the conference, with themed roundtable conversations, a hands on seminar/teachin, film screenings, and a special forum.

One of the purposes of the conference is to open up the academic conversation about comics and their relationship to various disciplines, literacies, and technologies to students. Douglas College has just registered to participate in the Money Mart Easter Seals 24 Hour Relay.

The 24 Hour Relay raises funds in support of the Easter Seal Camping Program, which sends children with disabilities from all over the province to one of three camp sites in BC at no cost to their families. These kids get to enjoy one week of summer camp fun away from life’s daily challenges. Last year over 850 kids got to go to camp – thanks to the money raised from the 24 Hour Relay.

What’s Car Free Day Main Street?

The first Car Free Day organizers wanted to create a neighbourhood oriented community festival. Since then, it’s snowballed in popularity with over 200,000 people participating in Car Free festivals throughout the city, including one on the best street in Vancouver, Main Street!

Imagine replacing cars for a day with street food, larger restaurant patios, mini-festivals, dozens of bands, kid friendly activities (like kids yoga, button making, art, bike lessons and sidewalk chalk), three full artisan markets, a fashion show, a roller derby, dancing, as well as hundreds of non-profits, local artisans and businesses? Car Free Vancouver’s Main Street festival is two kilometres of fun that you won’t see again until 2014! But it won’t happen in 2014 if we don’t have volunteers for 2013.

That’s why we need you to get involved and volunteer for Car Free Day Vancouver – Main Street!

Sunday, June 16th from noon to 7pm.

Organization: KidStart Mentoring (PLEA)
Position Title: Volunteer Mentor
Location: Lowermain Land
Position Duration: Long term (4 months or more)
Time Commitment: 2-3 hours per week
Position Details:

KidStart is an award winning, CARF accredited (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) Prevention and Diversion program for kids age 6+ that provides carefully screened and selected adult volunteers to mentor or coach vulnerable children and youth. The program has been operating using the one-to-one mentoring model for more than twenty years. KidStart relies on funding from donations, grants and gaming revenue to provide and support a growing group of committed volunteer kid coaches.

The young people who benefit the most from participating in KidStart are those that experience difficulties in their lives. They may do poorly at school, associate with the wrong crowd, draw the attention of the police, exhibit negative attitudes and be uncommunicative or susceptible to exploitation.
Our volunteers are recruited, screened, trained and supported by a team of skilled Coordinators of Volunteers. The goal of our volunteers is to develop a positive relationship with the youth and engage kids one-to-one in activities that promote success and achievement.
