PACWEST Men's Soccer Athlete of the Week- Week #3
Sahil Sandhu, 2012 PACWEST Player of the year and 2012 CCAA Player of the Year nominee made his return to the PACWEST this past weekend. This 3rd year student-athlete picked up where he left off last season with two stellar road performances this past weekend against two traditionally strong opponents.
On Saturday, the Royals travelled to the North Shore where they defeated the Capilano Blues 1-0 in a hard fought battle. Sandhu showed great resilience as he was double teamed all game and was still able to create multiple chances, eventually setting up the game winner in the 65th minute.
On Sunday, the Royals made their way to the Island to play their arch rivals VIU. Again, Sandhu had a dominant performance scoring two goals and setting up the insurance goal to lead the Royals to a 3-1 road victory. The Royals were down 1-0 early to the Mariners. Sandhu evened the score line to 1-1 on a penalty kick after Javid Khan was taken down in the box. A few minutes later Sandhu raced down the left flank, beat a defender 1 on 1 and cleverly chipped the keeper to score the game winner. His speed and clinical finishing helped the Royals complete a 6-point weekend and keep pace for the PACWEST league title.
PACWEST Men's Soccer Athlete of the Week- Week #1
After a 1 year hiatus from the PACWEST and Douglas College, Sahil Sandhu has returned for his 2nd year and is currently enrolled in the Sports Sciences program . This past weekend Sandhu played a pivotal role in the Royals successful road trip to Capilano and Vancouver Island University.
On Saturday, the Royals defeated Capilano 2-0 as Sandhu was a constant threat every time he was on the ball and would eventually score the game winner.
On Sunday, the Royals then traveled over to the Island to face VIU and battled to 1-1 draw. Again Sandhu was a force all game and eventually scored the game tying goal in the 2nd half but came short of scoring the game winner on several chances.
The Royals finished off the tough road trip with 4 points and sit atop the PACWEST Standings. Sandhu has scored 4 goals in 4 games picking up where he left off after a stellar rookie season in 2010.
PACWEST Men's Soccer Athlete of the Week- Week #2
For the 2nd straight weekend, Sahil Sandhu of Douglas College had another stellar performance in PACWEST league play leading the Royals to home wins over Quest and Langara.
On Saturday, the Royals defeated a visiting Quest squad 3-2. Sandhu helped his team battle back after being down 2-1 by setting up all 3 goals including the game tying with 9 minutes left and then game winner with 3 minutes left in the game. Sandhu was resilient and continued to be a force all game opening up space for his teammates to find the net.
On Sunday, Langara came to town. Sandhu, having his best showing of the year thus far took control of his Royals, helping them to a 5-2 convincing win. Sandhu opened the scoring 10 minutes into the game and didn’t look back, scoring a hatrick in the first half. Sandhu would add another in the second half to complete his four goal game. His speed and clinical finishing helped the Royals to a sweep this past weekend and keep pace with VIU for the PACWEST league title.
PACWEST Athlete of the Week- Week #7
On Saturday, the Royals hosted Capilano University and came away with a very one-sided 7-0 result. After creating several chances early the Royals jumped out to an early lead in the first half and didn’t look back. After 55 minutes, Sandhu lead the Royals as usual with 2 goals while setting up 2 before coming off the field.
On Sunday, the Royals hosted Vancouver Island University in an all-important battle for top spot in the PACWEST. The Royals battled to a hard fought 3-2 win to take sole possession of top spot. Sandhu came out flying early and caused havoc all game long for VIU defenders and finished with 2 goals while helping created the free kick that led to the game winner. Sandhu was constantly buzzing in the attacking third and his speed and intensity helped the Royals get the result.
The Royals now sit alone in top spot with 27 points (8 wins and 3 ties) going into the last weekend of play and Sandhu now has 13 goals in 12 games and leads the PACWEST in scoring.
