Royals top conference after Cap tourney

Yeung and Campbell lead the way
Monday, November 28, 2011

Logan Campbell, Douglas College Royals, 2011It was an amazing weekend for Charmagne Yeung and Logan Campbell.

Yeung, Douglas College’s newly named Badminton team captain, battled hard to upset number-one ranked Veronica Yeung of host Capilano in PacWest tournament play on November 26.

Not missing a beat Yeung then teamed with rookie partner Campbell to sweep all five mixed double matches, helping to pace the Royals to victory at the second tournament of the season.

Campbell then went on to win the men's doubles event with partner Luo Wei. The pair had also won the men's doubles event earlier in the season.

The duo of Campbell and Yeung finished with two titles each and a perfect 9-0 record.

“Logan and Charmagne were absolutely fantastic for us all weekend,” said Douglas head coach Al Mawani.  “The team performance was brilliant with the injury challenges we had to face this season.”

In women’s doubles, Amy Leung and Lisa Chen also went undefeated in team competition by winning all four of their matches.

After two tournaments Douglas holds top spot in the PacWest conference with 723 total points while second-place Capilano has 528. The Royals now break for the holidays and will host the final regular-season tourney at the David Lam Campus on January 28-29.

After that, Mawani’s players hope to push their impressive streak to seven-consecutive BC championships at the playoff tourney at Thompson Rivers University in February.

Team Standings after 2 tournaments:
Douglas 723 points
Capilano 528 points
Langara 487 points
TRU 405 points
Kwantlen 313 points
VIU 194 points
