Royals aim to stretch Logan’s run

Douglas hosts the next PacWest badminton tournament
Monday, January 23, 2012

Logan Campbell, Douglas College Badminton, 2012Visiting teams will expect a tough reception when league-leading Douglas hosts the next PacWest badminton tournament on January 28-29.

One of the challenges will be facing Royals’ first-year star Logan Campbell who has been simply perfect.

“It’s going to be interesting to watch Logan look to continue his early success by putting his unbeaten streak on the line,” says Royals coach Al Mawani. “After the first two tournaments, Logan has won two men’s doubles and two mixed doubles events.

“He also just came back from an Alberta tournament where he won the men’s doubles and singles events.”

A Calgarian, the fifth-seeded Logan won the men’s title at Mount Royal University tournament by upsetting five-time national champ – and former Royal – Alvin Lau 21-8, 22-20.

Playing beside him, Logan’s doubles partner has compiled an equally impressive record. Royal’s team captain Charmagne Yeung is 26-0 this season, sweeping the opposition in singles plus mixed and women’s doubles events at Capilano and Vancouver Island University.

Mawani calls his fourth-year dynamo from Surrey “our team’s “leader and hardest worker.”

And she’s been leading the Royals to plenty of success. Douglas College enters the third and final regular-season tournament with 723 team points, followed by Capilano at 528 and Langara at 487.

On a squad deep in talent, other top players to watch for include Luo Wei, who has earned both singles and men’s doubles event wins this season plus doubles team Lisa Chen and Amy Leung.

The action runs 9am-5pm on Saturday and Sunday at the Douglas College Coquitlam Campus. Top players then advance to the provincial championships on February 18-19 at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops.
