Fearsome foursome leads Royals sweep

Lead-leading Douglas sweeps all five event categories

Douglas College showed it’s the supreme court while hosting the final badminton tournament of the PacWest’s regular-season.

For the second time in this campaign, lead-leading Douglas topped the event swept all five categories in the A pool. Four Douglas athletes – RuiLin Huang, Chamagne Yeung, Bob Sharma and Logan Campbell – each topped two divisions at the Coquitlam campus event on January 28-29.

The Royals amassed aggregate scores of 193 team points and 175 individual points – while second-place Capilano earned 161-109. The results gave the Royals a grand total of 1,091 points after three tournaments, with Capilano earning 798 and Langara 725 in the six-team league.

Sharma grabbed titles alone and with a partner. The native of Patiala, India won the men’s singles division following a hard-fought 21-19, 19-21, 21-9 decision over Langara’s Luke Couture. Sharma also combined with Campbell to capture men’s doubles with a 21-12, 21-19 finals win over Ken Fung and Couture of Langara.

The Royals’ mixed doubles pairing of Campbell and Yeung continued their winning ways. The dynamic duo defeated teammates Amy Leung and Simon Wu 21-11, 21-10 in an all-Douglas final after beating Langara’s Julian Chang and Shurman Chan 21-2, 21-9 in the semis.

“The win gave both Charmagne and Logan their sixth tournament wins of the season and a perfect 39-0 for the season,” said coach Al Mawani. 

Yeung also combined  with Huang to win the women’s doubles final 21-17, 21-10 over Rosalynn Chong and Veronica Yeung of Capilano.

Rounding out the weekend, Huang topped women’s singles with a 21-11, 21-6 finals win over Capilano’s Veronica Yeung.

Finishing up the regular season,  Mawani next leads his charges to the BC championships at Thompson Rivers University on February 18. TRU also hosts the Nationals in March.
