Badminton and volleyball squads leading Royals
Douglas College teams head into December with the Royals controlling first place in Team Badminton while the men’s volleyball squad holds second spot in Pacific Western Athletic Association (PacWest) standings.
The powerhouse badminton squad leads the way after two tournaments, including a perfect 5-0 performance at Capilano University on November 25-26. The Royals host the final tournament of the regular season at the David Lam Campus on January 28-29. After that, Douglas hopes to claim its seventh-consecutive BC title at championships at Thompson Rivers University in February.
In men’s volleyball, the Royals boast an impressive 9-3 record and are looking ahead to their biggest test in the new year.
Burnaby’s Jordan Or has helped pace Douglas with 36 spikes and 111 digs – good for second spot in the conference’s individual rankings. Things will heat up for Or and his teammates on January 13-14 when Douglas hosts first-place Vancouver Island University Mariners in a two-game series.
In women’s volleyball, Douglas is 1-11 with two players cracking the top 15 in conference stats. Jacquelyn Holmes leads the Royals with 36 spikes and 86 digs while Jillian Noort has 29-71.
The Royals remain in the thick of the playoff hunt in men’s basketball with a 3-2 pace, good for fifth-place in the nine-team conference. Highlighting the early campaign was an 84-68 Douglas triumph over conference-leading VIU, the only loss suffered by the Mariners.
Individually, Fason Aurel David is second in PacWest stats, averaging 5 assists per game. Atti Athwal is third among conference scorers with 20.3 points per game while teammate Hameet Mahal is fourth with 18.3.
On the women’s basketball court, Douglas has had a tough 0-5 start and narrowly missed the winner’s column in a recent 50-48 loss to Kwantlen.
