An exciting group of Douglas College students with a passion to dance will be performing a routine in Hip Hop. The Hip Hop club has been an integral part of Douglas College giving students the opportunity to express their emotions through the art of dance. This self choreographed group is going to rock the stage this International Day.

 

Kutapira: Percussion Marimba Band 12:10pm – 12:55pm

Originally based in Vancouver, this unique five piece marimba and percussion ensemble will leave you dancing on your feet. This group is building a connection through the traditions of Zimbabwe’s marimba music and the rhythmic soul of Afro Cuban Drumming.

Bollywood – Karima Essa 12:55pm – 1:10pm

This award winning dancer from Elite3 Studios goes by the name of Billo Rani and has performed at many indo-cultural venues including the annual Sawan Mela, Partnership Walk, Surrey Fusion Festival, and the SFU Sustainability Festival. She is not only a dance instructor but a breath taking performer who will charm you with her exotic moves and expressions.

Roberto Espinoza 1:10pm – 1:30pm

 

The father of a Douglas College student and a passionate Mexican singer, Roberto has been singing since before he could talk. His family and the happiness singing brings him motivates him to perform. Roberto has performed as a singer in Mariachi bands, and he comes to Douglas College with a solo performance to give the crowd a little taste of Honduras.

Persian Ensemble 12:00 – 12:15PM

 

The Persian Ensemble is made up of both a Douglas College student and outside members.
The Ensemble will include Kaveh Haghighat (Singer), Farhad Abbasi on the Tar instrument, and Keyvan Haghighat on percussions. The music resembles Persian Folk.

Powwow 12:30 – 12:40PM

 

Lacy Morin-Desjarlais has been dancing Powwow for 8 years. She is Saulteaux and Metis. Powwow is a contemporary First Nation Celebration. The events have many dance styles for men and woman that each have their own style of regalia. The dancers are separated into age categories. Often the drummers try to trick the dancers with going faster or suddenly stopping. Douglas College has a beginners practice on Mondays from 5-6pm in the small dance studio.
